Playline

Playline is a playful urban design concept developed for Billund, Denmark, transforming the pedestrian route between LEGO Campus and LEGOLAND into an interactive experience.

The project explores how visual elements can encourage movement, imagination, and spontaneous play in everyday public spaces. Through colourful ground graphics, abstract shapes, and rhythmic patterns, an ordinary walk becomes an opportunity for exploration and interaction for both children and adults.

The project began with research and co-creation sessions involving children from Billund International School.

Observing how they move, interact, and play helped us understand how simple visual interventions could encourage spontaneous and imaginative experiences.

These insights informed the development of a flexible graphic language based on rhythm, movement, and playful exploration.

Starting from the circle as a fundamental shape, we developed a series of abstract forms and sequences that create a visual rhythm along the path.

Rather than prescribing specific activities, the graphics invite people to interpret and interact with them freely, whether by jumping, following patterns, changing direction, or inventing their own games.

The result is a spatial design concept that integrates play into the everyday urban environment, turning movement through the city into an open-ended experience.

The Playline has since been brought to life, combining elements from three different design proposals, including this project, into the final implementation.
